Cagayan de Oro’s handmade paper “Pinyapel”, tagged as the future of packaging, has won in the D&AD Future Impact Awards in New York.
Pinyapel, a locally-manufactured specialty paper made out of discarded pineapple leaves from plantations in Bukidnon, was recognized internationally for its sustainability and positive impact to the environment.
The award, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 10, was officially conferred to the Philippines last October 24 by the A&AD Future Impact Awards for Environment and Sustainability in New York City; an annual activity recognizing those who put their creative ideas into world-changing projects, products, and campaigns.
“Coined and developed by the DTI-Design Center of the Philippines, an attached agency of the DTI, the ‘Pinyapel’ is a portmanteau of the Filipino words ‘pinya’ (pineapple) and ‘papel’ (paper). It is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the DCP, Cagayan de Oro Handmande Paper, Nature’s Fresh and Ideatechs Packaging Corporation,” the DTI Region 10 said in its Facebook page.
“It is a forward-thinking approach to combat the growing problem of non-biodegradable plastic,” the agency added.
Pinyapel is described by the agency as the future of packaging.
“The great thing about the ‘Pinyapel’ is that it is water-resistant, making it a good choice for paper cups, bowls, and various food container options resulting to a reduced amount of agriculture waste aligning with the United Nations’ sustainable development goal of responsible production and consumption,” the agency said.
The Cagayan de Oro Handmade Paper, a store founded by Ms. Lolita “Luchi” Cabanlet, is no stranger to international awards and recognition, the DTI said. It was declared as the top three winner of the Most Innovative Product Award at the Global Sources Fair in Hongkong in 2017 and was also nominated in the Manila FAME October 2018 Katha Awards.
