• President Duterte and Vice President Robredo’s faces are in a rice paddy
  • The art was made by the Philippine Rice Institute in Los Baños, Laguna
  • This is part of a project to creatively call for unity in advocating change in rice agriculture

The Philippines’ top two officials – President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo – were featured in no ordinary canvass: a rice paddy.

The Philippine Rice Institute (PhilRice) took the busts of the two as inspiration for their art project, which used a special variety of rice to paint those images.

PhilRice used a Korean rice variety, which grows with purple leaves to be able to create the black lines that formed the facial features of Duterte and Robredo. The alignment was calculated by senior civil engineering students from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)

This is not the first rice paddy art done for Duterte. A few weeks ago, a photo of a paddy art located along the BioTech road of the UPLB shows the famous nickname of the President – “Du30” with the 0 painted as his bust.

According to PhilRice deputy executive director for administration Roger Barroga, their art is part of the project called Rice Up Pilipinas.

“It is a creative way to call for unity among Filipinos to become partners for change in rice farming,” he said in a Bohol Chronicle article.

Another official of PhilRice, Nehemiah Caballong: “Our theme conveys two messages: PhilRice’s goal of increasing rice production and achieving rice security through research and development; and ‘rising up’ the Philippines through the leadership of the  two highest officials.”

ABS-CBN News said in a story that rice paddy art came from Japan, which is also a rice-producing and – consuming country.
