MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Manny Pacquiao is in favor of and will push death penalty by hanging.
According to an article written by Amita Legaspi for GMA News Online, the retired boxing superstar is in favor of the death penalty but only for heinous crimes such as drug trafficking, rape with murder, robbery with murder, and kidnap for ransom.
Given a choice, he told the members of the press on Monday, July 4, that his preferred mode is death by hanging because he believes that it is a more humane way to carry out the death penalty than lethal injection.
He admitted that it may be considered as barbaric or cruel but it should be implemented if it is enacted into law.
Sen.
[If you’ll cover it, you’ll really find it pitiful. But we know that our law is the law. It doesn’t only apply to some, even us who have positions in the government, in service, even the president, once we commit something really bad, we must be punished as well.]
Pacquiao, who is also an evangelical pastor, emphasized that this doesn’t go against his religious beliefs because the Bible is not against the death penalty.
Rappler quoted him as saying: “No, constitutionally and biblically, ‘di against ang death penalty (the Bible is not against the death penalty). I can explain that properly pagdating sa [when it comes to the] Bible.”
