MANILA, Philippines – Smoking and drinking will no longer be allowed in public places and in the White Beach once Boracay opens this coming October; this was according to the Department of Tourism.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said even in parties such as the ‘Laboracay’ event during Labor Day will be prohibited in an effort to promote an environment-friendly atmosphere in the island.

“Definitely, no more drinking and smoking sa White Beach. Why? Because this is a public beach. You want your children to walk around na hindi may bubog ng glass, na hindi may cigarette butts,” said Puyat during a media forum with Inquirer early this week.

However, visitors and tourists can still smoke and drink inside the hotel where they stayed, as long as it is private.

“They can smoke and drink where they stay, in the private, but the long beach has to be protected,” she added.

Puyat said she already discussed the guidelines for these orders with Environment Secretary Ro Cimatu and Interior Secretary Eduardo Año.

She said this is also for the safety of the public.

“Pwede ka mag-paa, hindi ka matatakot na baka masugatan ang paa mo dahil biglang may broken bottle pala, tapos alam mo ‘yung nilalakaran mo ay talagang sand at hindi abo ng sigarilyo,” the official explained in a separate interview over DZMM.

Cimatu earlier announced Boracay is set to open this coming October 26; six months after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered its closure due to environmental issues.
