• A daughter of a street vendor brought home to the Philippines its fourth gold
  • Margielyn Didal could receive up to P6-million in cash incentives
  • She said she would give the money to her mother so they could start a small business

With an incentive of up to P6-million in cash awaiting her victory, her mother could probably stop selling kwek-kwek forever.

Margielyn Arda Didal had just brought the Philippines its fourth gold after ruling the women’s street skate tilt in the 18th Asian Games at Jakabaring Sports City (JSC) Skate Park in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on August 29.

Didal, as per GMA News, is a daughter of a sidewalk vendor selling eggs fried in flour butter, locally known as ‘kwek-kwek’ in Cebu City.

Her father, on the other hand, is a carpenter; and the young girl is a former street kid.

Due to her incredible performance at the competition, she could receive cash incentives of up to P6-million from the government and private patrons.

“Bibigay ko po sa nanay ko para makapagtayo kami ng small business,” she said.

Philippine Olympic Committee (PSC) president Ricky Vargas said he is blessed to witness the young girl’s performance whom he described as hardworking and having a ‘belief in herself.’

“Congratulations, Margie. The country is grateful for your efforts and sacrifices,” Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez, likewise, said in a statement.

The PSC said they are arranging a hero’s welcome for her.

Didal champed the game with a score of 30.4 points, Japanese player Isa Kaya followed her with 25.0 points.

To note, as per Manila Standard, all gold medals of the Philippines were won by women players; the latest before her being Hidilyn Diaz in the weightlifting category.
