The Congress’ Committee on Local Government has already approved the bill that proposes to divide the Province of Palawan into three.

Governor Jose Alvarez and other officials of the province were summoned to deliberate on the proposal.

“Siyempre, sinagot naman lahat ni Governor na mahirap ang ating probinsiya sapagkat almost 800 kilometers from north to south. so kung sa Luzon tayo, tatlong probinsiya na ang madadaanan natin,” explained Board Member Leoncio Ola who was one of those who came to the hearing.

[Of course, our Governor clarified that our province is poor because we are almost 800 kilometers from north to south, so if were are located in Luzon, our length would be total to three provinces.]

The Congress also deliberated on whether the land area, population and income would be enough to meet the requirements for the divide.

The Local Government Code states that a province must have 2,000 square kilometers land area, P20 million income, and around 250,000 population.

Board Member Ola said that the three would-be provinces will be able to meet the standards.

If ever the divide would happen, the three provinces will be named as Palawan Del Sur, Palawan del Norte and Palawan Oriental.

And regarding the income brought by the Malampaya gas field, which is located in northern Palawan, El Nido, the resolution states “equitable sharing.” Meaning, all three provinces will benefit from it, explained Ola.

The resolution will be passed on to the Committee on Rules, and will be endorsed to the plenary.

If ever approved, it will then be passed to the Senate and the recommendations of the Committee on Rules will be adopted.
