A Barangay (village) Captain was shot dead by two men on a motorcycle in the town of Tanza in Cavite on Saturday; the first day of the election period for the May 14 local polls.
The victim was identified by the police as Leonilo Arbonido, 56, Brangay Captain of Julugan VI.
According to the Tanza Police PO2Donny Montano, the victim was at his sari-sari store when the incident occurred.
The riding-in-tandem suspects came and fired shots at him and he succumbed to three gunshot wounds.
Authorities said the witnesses were not able to get the plate number of the fleeing suspects’ motorcycle.
Police are tracking down the assailants and checking CCTV footage at nearby areas to determine the motive for the crime; noting that Arbonido was in his last term as the barangay captain.
Meanwhile, as the election period for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections started on Saturday, April 14, PNP reminded gun owners of the gun ban which commenced on the same day.
Anyone who violates will be arrested for illegal possession of firearms and violating the election rules.
