Katie’s biological mother eventually found out about the affair and divorced Steven. Katie was already pregnant when her mother reported the matter to the police.
But the father and daughter moved to Knightdale and had a baby before their arrest in January.
The incest charge also forced Katie to move in with her adoptive parents as part of the bail conditions.
He killed them all
Steven’s mother told the police her son admitted to killing Bennet, Katie and Anthony Fusco.
“He left the baby dead. He told me to call the police and I shouldn’t go over there,” she was heard saying in the 911 call.
“He killed his wife, he killed her father, and — I can’t even believe this is happening,” she added.
The mother said Katie broke up with Steven over the phone on Wednesday. The suspect allegedly said he will be going to New York and will be bringing the baby with him.
Meanwhile, Knightdale Police Chief Lawrence Capps said in a press conference that Steven Pladl went to New York “for the specific purpose of making some confrontations.”
“Obviously we’re very saddened by today’s events. Events like this are not common in our community. Unfortunately, they are not uncommon in society” Capps said.
“We are heartbroken, saddened over the death of this child, and like you, we’re trying to make sense of all of the factors that led up to this senseless taking of life,” the police officer added.
