- Sen. Nancy Binay said that attacks against Sen. Leila de Lima were “below the belt”
- She sympathized with de Lima, saying her family has experienced a similar case
- Binay, along with other Senators, had earlier voted de Lima out as Chairman of the Justice Committee
Senator Nancy Binay expressed sympathy for her colleague, Senator Leila de Lima; calling attacks against the latter as “below the belt.”
De Lima has been the target of criticism after she launched an investigation over alleged extrajudicial killings under the “war on drugs” being led by President Rodrigo Duterte.
This eventually led to her being voted out by her colleagues, including Binay, as the Chairperson of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
An alleged sex video featuring de Lima has also been thrown against her by detractors.
Despite being one of those who voted her off the committee, Binay said that she consoled de Lima; drawing from her family’s experience.
“Yung iba naman below the belt. Kung tutuusin, ano ba pakialam natin sa love life niya? After niya mag-privilege speech, nilapitan ko siya. Sinabihan ko siya na lilipas din ‘yan based from our experience, ‘di ba? [Some are below the belt. When you think about it, what do we care about her love life? After she gave her privilege speech, I approached her. I told her that it will pass, based from our experience, right?]” she said, as previously quoted by GMA News.
Incidentally, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano who has become de Lima’s strongest critic and President Duterte’s strongest defender in the Senate, also led investigations into corruption allegations thrown against Vice President Jejomar Binay prior to the 2016 elections.
Binay and de Lima were also in opposite fences during the past election.
