• Senator De Lima called the government an “assassin state” after a convicted drug lord was killed in a riot inside the New Bilibid Prison
  • Convicted Chinese drug lord Tony Co was killed in the riot
  • High-profile inmates Jaybee Sebastian, Peter Co and Vicente Sy were wounded in the rumble

Senator Leila De Lima doubted that the incident that took place at the Building 14 of the Maximum Security compound in the New Bilibid Prison, where a convicted Chinese drug lord died, was a riot.

De Lima suspects that the incident was a “mafia” tactic employed by the government to scare witnesses who refused to testify against her. She called the government an “assassin state.”

“Absent of any other available and reliable information, I’m not discounting the fact that this is another way of persuading the Bilibid 19 to testify against me. “This is Malacañang’s way of sending its message to prisoners who refuses to implicate me as part of Aguirre’s teleserye drama projecting me as Bilibid queen,” GMA News Online quoted the lawmaker as saying.

“I plead to Malacañang to stop these tragic, desperate and despicable actions. These prisoners are supposed to be under the government’s protection. To threaten them with violence and murder simply because they refuse to be used in the ongoing House hearing is the height of Mafia tactics and gangster-style operations that makes this government worse than a narco-state. It makes this government an assassin state, a state that promotes murder and summary execution as policy and as weapon against its perceived enemies,” De Lima added.

Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre announced that at around 7:40 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, a riot erupted inside the Building 14 that houses more than 50 high-profile inmates that resulted in the death of Tony Co, a convicted Chinese drug lord.

Allegedly, the incident started when an inmate, former police officer Clarence Dongail confronted Tony Co’s group who were allegedly sniffing shabu inside their cell.

Bureau of Corrections officer-in-charge P/Supt. Rolando Asuncion said seven to eight inmates were involved in the riot. An icepick was recovered from the scene, he said.

Jaybee Sebastian, named as the king of drug lord after he reportedly cornered the illegal drug trade inside the penitentiary allegedly allowed by then Justice Secretary and now Senator Leila De Lima, was wounded in the incident. Also injured were Peter Co and Vicente Sy. They were taken to the Medical Center Muntinlupa.

De Lima claimed that the Tony Co, Sebastian, Sy and Peter Co were those who have yet to be convinced by the DOJ to testify against her.
