• President Durete said he discussed with Indonesian President Joko Widodo the case of Mary Jane Veloso
• The President  said he is not at liberty to divulge details on the discussion about Veloso’s case
• Veloso is currently in Indonesia’s death row for drug trafficking

President Rodrigo Duterte revealed that one of the topics discussed during his closed door meeting with his Indonesian counterpart President Joko Widodo was Mary Jane Veloso’s case; a Filipina in Indonesia’s death row for drug trafficking.

President Duterte, however, said he is not at liberty to divulge details of his discussion with Widodo regarding Veloso’s case.

“This was one of the topics of our conversation. Everybody was excluded and there was a lot to cover regarding security arrangements including the Filipinos who are in jail facing charges in Indonesia,” Duterte said.

“There are matters that I cannot tell you now. I’m sorry I am not at liberty but maybe I can talk to the family first before anything else. It would be improper really for me talking about it before I get hold of the family and tell them the developments of the case,” he added.

Meanwhile, the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) thanked the President for deciding to talk to Veloso’s family first before disclosing to the public his discussion with Widodo about the Filipina convict’s case.

“Nais naming magpasalamat sa pangulo dahil kahit maraming nakahanay na aktibidad sa pagbisita niya sa Indonesia, ‘di niya nakalimutang talakayin ang kaso ni Mary Jane,” NUPL Assistant Secretary-General Atty. Josalee Deinla said.

[We would like to thank the president because despite his many scheduled activities in his working visit to Indonesia, he did not forget to discuss Mary Jane’s case.]

According to GMA News Online, Deinla hopes that President Duterte’s conversation with the Indonesian would hasten the release of Mary Jane.
