MANILA, Philippines – Resign and be shot?
In stark contrast to her earlier pleas, a more-defiant Sen. Leila De Lima said she is willing to resign and be shot in front of President Rodrigo Duterte if it can be proven the evidence he has against her is authentic.
“I’m willing to resign. I’m willing to be shot in front of the President if there is authentic evidence that is not fabricated,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted her as saying.
The embattled senator also told Duterte to verify his sources because she does not want him to be embarrassed if they turn out to be fake.
“I’m telling you Mr. President, ayaw ko pong mapahiya kayo. Mapapahiya kayo diyan at ayaw ko pong mangyari ‘yan sa inyo. Kung ano man ang ebidensya n’yo diyan, sinasabi ko na sa inyo na ang ebidensya na ‘yan ay hindi totoo. Fake, manufactured, fabricated,” she said.
[I’m telling you Mr. President, I don’t want you to be humiliated. You’ll be humiliated and I don’t want that to happen to you. Whatever evidence you have, I’m telling you that evidence is not true. Fake, manufactured, fabricated.]
De Lima also advised Duterte to make his sources come clean and tell him the truth.
“My unsolicited advice to you, whoever is supplying you with that information, please face them and urge them to be honest with you. I will stand by my innocence, now and forever,” she said.
While refusing to disclose her relationship with former bodyguard and driver Ronnie Palisoc Dayan, whom Duterte said was her lover and bagman of drug lords in Bilibid, De Lima said she had never let her personal issues get in the way of her duties as a government official.
“Someone’s personal life is sensitive. Someone’s personal life is sacred. I assure you that whatever personal crisis I have gone through had never affected the fulfillment of my duties in life,” she said.
