Award-winning and sought-after TV personality Atom Araullo has clarified things about his resignation as reporter in ABS-CBN News.
Just recently, news about Araullo’s ‘quiet resignation’ caught the social media by firestorm; with many neizens saying that the hunk reporter is quitting because of his strong stance in some political issues. Prior to his resignation, Araulo has expressed strong dissent in the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
In his clarificatory Facebook post, Araullo said he resigned to “explore other areas of media and to grow as a journalist. “However, I continue to work with the network and our programs. My political views were not a factor in making this decision”.
He also expressed gratitude to his supporters. “I thank everyone for the support they expressed on social media. I look forward to playing my role in the debates and issues to come,” Araullo said.
Netizens have lauded Araullo’s move; saying that his resignation is a testament to his principles, because journalists are expected to be ‘objective’ in news reporting.
Araullo also said that journalists should not be harassed when they take stands on issues. “Having studied pressing issues based on fact and with an open mind, journalists, like any other individual, should ultimately stand up for the truth. This does not weaken our journalism, it strengthens it.”
He also added “Our guiding principles are fairness and accuracy. As we face tougher scrutiny from the public, we in media also strive to be more transparent and open to criticism.”
The former ABS-CBN reporter clarified that he just unloaded reportorial duties but will still be part of his shows, such as the Kapamilya morning show Umagang Kay Ganda.
Araullo has been a sought-after reporter due to his large fanbase, and some of his reports went viral, especially his commendable coverage of Supertyphoon Yolanda in 2013.
