• Suspected drug lord Melvin ‘Dragon’ Odicta and his wife were shot dead in Caticlan
  • The couple were reportedly alighting from a RoRo vessel when an unidentified assailant shot them
  • The incident came just days after the Odictas met with Interior Secretary Sueno in Camp Crame

MANILA, Philippines – Just three days after meeting Interior Secretary Ismael Sueno, suspected drug lord Melvin Odicta, Sr. and wife Merriam were reportedly shot dead while alighting from a RoRo ferry in Caticlan early Monday morning, August 29.

Odicta, allegedly known as ‘Dragon, in the drug underworld,  is a suspected big time drug lord in Western Visayas who owns a restaurant, a fleet of taxi cab and a transport service in Iloilo City.

The couple met with Sueno on Thursday at Camp Crame to clear their names and provide a list of officials involved in illegal drug trade in the region.

Atty. Raymond Fortun, counsel for the Odictas, insisted his clients were innocent from the allegation.

A report from Aklan Police Provincial Office said the couple were onboard a 2Go RoRo from Batangas to Caticlan and were walking at the Caticlan Jetty Port around 1:30 am when an unidentified assailant peppered them with bullets.

They were reportedly with dozen other people when the shooting happened.

Odicta suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body while his wife was shot in the back. They were immediately rushed to the hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

Another lawyer for the Odictas, Atty. Gualberto Cataluña, said his client managed to still call him to seek help after the shooting.

“Melvin even called me for help but they were declared dead when they arrived at the Malay District Hospital,” Cataluña told reporters.

Odicta has been the subject of police investigation for their alleged links to Chief Superintendent Bernardo Diaz, one of the ‘narco-generals’ President Rodrigo Duterte accused of coddling drug lords.

Last year, he and his son, Melvin Jr. were also accused of attacking a local radio station in Iloilo along with other armed men.

In July, Odicta and his wife presented themselves to Senior Supt. Remus Zacharias Canieso of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) to deny his alleged link to illegal drugs.
