• President-elect Rodrigo Duterte told his Cabinet members, he will not allow them to campaign for elected office
  • He said they will retire together after his term as President
  • Duterte also emphasized that he will not tolerate corruption, especially among his Cabinet

Just days before his inauguration as the country’s next chief executive, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte reminded incoming members of his Cabinet that he will not be allowing them to campaign for elected office during his term.

Duterte urged his Cabinet not to seek elective post after his administration; adding that he does not want them to use public funds to further their political career.

Sabi ko sa mga Cabinet members [I told the Cabinet members], ‘do not launch a campaign here in the office.’ If you have plans to whatever, do not do it here in my Cabinet. Ayoko ‘yung nakaupo dito na magkandidato kasi [I do not want incumbent secretaries to run as candidates because] you will just use the public funds, the time and the effort of the government just to campaign to win,” he said, as previously quoted by GMA News.

In an obvious reference to his age and that of many in his Cabinet, Duterte told his incoming Cabinet members that they will retire together.

At 71 years old, Duterte is set to become the oldest person to be elected President of the Philippines.

Pare-pareho naman ang edad natin.  [Our ages are all the same]. We retire all together. Binigay ito ng Diyos, tama na. [This was given to us by God, this is enough],” he said.

He also emphasized his zero tolerance with corruption; adding that he will personally urge corrupt officials, including, if ever, an erring Cabinet member, to quit.

“There will be no corruption. If you are a Cabinet secretary and you are corrupt, I will just whisper, ‘Please go’… It has to stop. I am hell-bent in stopping corruption. Ayaw ko talaga. Yan ang tandaan ninyo kasi you’ll never get any help from me kung may kaso kayo ganun. [I really do not like it. Remember that because you’ll never get any help from me if you have such cases],” he said.
