A suspect involved in the plot to abduct presidential sister Kris Aquino and Congressman Manny Pacquiao was arrested in Laguna early this week.
Journal Online said joint operatives of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group swooped down on the suspect’s lair at Block 5, Lot 42, Zenia Street, Elvinda Village in Barangay Nueva, San Pedro, Laguna on Tuesday, April 26.
The suspect was identified as Reynaldo Vasquez Ilao. The arresting team seized a .45-caliber pistol and a hand grenade from him. A mobile phone owned by the suspect is also being checked to get possible information.
Authorities said Ilao is allegedly a co-conspirator in a plan by the Rajah Suleiman Movement (RSM) and Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), to kidnap the actress-TV host and Pacquiao and carry out bombing operations in Metro Manila.
Ilao is purportedly a member of RSM led by Mikhail Abrera alias Abdul Asiz, who was arrested at a checkpoint in Zamboanga City last April 16.
In a statement last Wednesday, April 27, President Benigno Aquino bared the plot to kidnap his sister and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.
“As part of their effort to gain favor with ISIS, one of the ASG leaders, Isnilon Hapilon, through his cohorts in prison, has tried to convert other prisoners in New Bilibid Prison to their cause and establish ties with remnants of the Rajah Sulayman Movement purportedly in an attempt to embark on a bombing campaign in Metro Manila,” President Aquino said.
“They allegedly even hatched plots to kidnap Manny Pacquiao or one of his children, as well as my sister Kris or one of her children, with the plan to use them in bargaining for the release of their cohorts. Threats against my own life have been investigated,” he added.
