Filipino actress Jacklyn Jose won the Best Actress award at the recently concluded 2016 Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, May 22, for portraying the title role in multi-awarded movie director Brillante Mendoza’s movie Ma’ Rosa.
Jose now holds the distinction of the first ever Filipino to win the BestActress award at the glamorous film festival.
As mentioned in the Philstar article dated May 23, 2016, the Pinay actress bested famous Hollywood actresses Charlize Theron (US entry “The Last Face” directed by Sean Penn) and Marion Cotillard (France’s “Mal de Pierres” / “From the Land of the Moon” directed by Nicole Garcia.
Jose said she was surprised by the award considering the other nominees are tough contenders whom she had been watching in movies for years.
“They are my idols,” Jose said, referring to Cotillard and Theron.
In an interview, Jacklyn Jose said she had to forget everything she had learned in her three decades in show business to effectively portray the role of a store owner who sells drugs on the side to be able to make ends meet.
“The biggest challenge for me was not to act. Especially since I am coming from television shows where I play loud and campy characters,” she told reporters.
According to her, director Mendoza instructed her to unlearn years of acting techniques typically used in the local industry.
Jose said she had to tone down everything to zero to be able to portray her role more realistically.
