• Teodoro confirmed Duterte’s offer to make him DND Secretary
  • However, he said he will need some time to think about it though
  • He will consult his family and other stakeholders concerned first

MANILA, Philippines – Confirming that the incoming president Rodrigo Duterte has indeed offered him the post of Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary which he used to head under former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro said he will still need some time to think about it though.

“I answered that it’s not a decision I can make alone. I have to consult my family and a lot of commitments I had and have made, and I will have to come back with a decision,” ABS-CBN quoted him as saying. “I’m not ready to give a response at this time and we agreed to keep it at that.”

Teodoro also admitted he was surprised at having been offered the post even as rumors flew around he was Duterte’s preferred choice to be defense chief.

“I was surprised. I thought we would just meet and I would offer my congratulations. But then Mark Villar and me were offered the post,” he said.

Mark Villar, the representative of Las Piñas, accepted Duterte’s offer to be the new chief of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

At the same time, Teodoro said he is ready to help Duterte in whatever capacity he can.

Ang commitment ko [My commitment], kung papaano tayo makakatulong [If I can help] in whatever capacity, we have to find that fit,” he said.

Teodoro had been staying away from the limelight since his loss in the 2010 presidential elections to his cousin, current president Benigno Aquino III.

His name cropped up again in the list of candidates being eyed by Duterte to work under his administration.
