- A supporter of Mayor Duterte was gunned down in Cagayan De Oro City
- The suspects are three unidentified assailants boarding a motorcycle
- The victim’s common-law wife believe the killing was politically-motivated
MANILA, Philippines – A Partido Demokratiko Pilipino –Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) member and a supporter of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was gunned down in Cagayan De Oro City early morning on Sunday, May 1.
The victim was identified as Gomercindo Piloton, 49. He was shot dead by still unidentified gunmen in Barangay Bayanga while attending to his sari-sari store around 6 am. Piloton sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was killed instantly.
According to a Facebook post by one Alex Paurom, Piloton was an environmental activist and the Political Organizer and PDP-Laban Coordinator of five hinterland barangays of Cagayan de Oro City.
Paurom said the victim was fully aware of the fact that he was receiving death threats constantly due to his “work in assuring the victory of Mayor Duterte in the said barangays up to the days prior to his murder.”
Apparently, Piloton’s active involvement in volunteerism work have been the subject of previous altercations with some ‘shadowy group’ financed by certain politicians operating in the area.
“The brutal assassination of Gomer is by no means an isolated event but part of the pattern of systematic flagrant Electoral exercise and corporate violence against PDP-LABAN, Indigenous Peoples, peasants, human rights defenders and the people of these Hinterland Barangays, We demand an immediate end to this barbaric act and agent of violence,” Paurom wrote.
Investigators from the city’s Police Station 8 in Barangay Lumbia said the three unidentified suspects on board a motorcycle fled heading in the direction of Talakag town in Bukidnon.
Piloton’s common-law wife, Elsa Casing, told ABS-CBN News the killing may have been politically-motivated since the victim allegedly had a heated argument previously with a supporter of another candidate.
Recovered from the scene were 6 fired cartridges, 6 slugs and 1 live ammunition, all believed to be coming from a caliber .45 pistol.
Police are still investigating the incident.
