- Presumptive President Duterte said he enjoyed Jose Manalo’s performance as “Rodney Juterte“
- Manalo impersonated the incoming president in a Sunday PinaSaya segment aired on GMA-7
- The government official even suggested how the comedian could impersonate him more closely
Even presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte himself said he enjoyed how GMA-7’s comedian, Jose Manalo, impersonated him during a segment of Sunday PinaSaya that was aired on live television for two consecutive weeks already.
In an article written by Aya Tantiangco for GMA News Online on May 22, 2016, it was disclosed that the incoming chief executive even suggested how Manalo could impersonate him more closely.
“Jose, I enjoyed the show. Ilayo mo lang nang konti (yung kamay mo). [Just move your hand a little farther.] Because the reason why I am placing my hand over my right cheek is that I am pressing a nerve there below the ear. Nadisgrasya ako sa motor. [I had an accident on a motorcycle.] To lessen the pain, dinidiin ko ‘yan [I press it],” Duterte said.
According to Manalo, he was so delighted when he learned that the outgoing mayor of Davao City appreciated his performance.
He even responded jokingly to Duterte’s compliment by saying, “Ayoko pong masira ‘yung karakter ninyo. Tinatakpan ko po (‘yung pisngi ko), kasi mas makinis po ‘yung mukha n’yo kaysa sa akin. [I do not want to mess up with your character. I cover my cheeks because your face is smoother than mine.]”
In both episodes aired on May 15 and May 22, Manalo was joined by Vice-Presidential forerunner Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo’s impersonator named Simpleni; Wally Bayola, who spoofed Boy Abunda; Barbie Forteza, who played as Kris Aquino; and comedienne Ai-ai Delas Alas, who served as Bayola’s co-host for “Star Buzz“.
