Incumbent Speaker Rep. Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte of the House of Representatives said on Friday that a significant majority of congressmen belonging to the Liberal Party (LP) want incoming Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez to serve as the House Speaker for the next administration.
In an article written by Marc Jayson Cayabyab for Philippine Daily Inquirer on May 20, 2016, it was disclosed that while Belmonte would like to remain in his post for the next term, the members of the Congress desire to have Presumptive President Rodrigo’s fellow Davaoeño as their leader.
“We talked at my house yesterday. I told him (Alvarez) that most of the Liberal Party bloc would like to join the majority and support the Duterte administration and him for Speaker. I’m sure he will be the next speaker,” Belmonte said.
Alvarez, who is a member of the PDP-Laban political party where Duterte served as the group’s standard-bearer during the recent local and national elections, was among the congressmen who advocated for a separate republic for Mindanao.
Prior to being seated in the Congress from 1998-2001, he served as the assistant general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA). In 2001, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appointed him as the cabinet secretary for the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC).
Aside from Alvarez, reports also state that re-electionist Rep. Karlo Nograles of Davao City is also among the Congress members considered by Duterte to serve as the House’s leader.
