- The Abu Sayyaf Group released a new video showing their three remaining hostages
- Hostages Canadian Robert Hall, Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad and Filipina Marites Flor pleaded for help
- The Islamist extremist group threatened to behead the three if their ransom demands are not met
The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) released a video that showed its three remaining hostages pleading for government intervention more than a week after fellow hostage Canadian John Ridsdel was beheaded when the militants’ multi-million ransom demands were not met.
In the two-minute video circulated by SITE Intelligence Group, a a non-governmental counter-terrorism organization, the hostages – one Canadian, one Norwegian and one Filipina – appealed to the Canadian and Philippine governments and to anybody who can help to heed the demands of the ASG.
The first hostage to speak was Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad. He said: “My name is Kjartan. I’m a hostage on Sulu Island. I’m appealing to the Canadian government, Filipino government, friends, families, anybody who can possibly help us… if the demand is not met we will be executed like our friend John a few days ago.”
Next to speak before the camera was Canadian Robert Hall.
“My name is Robert Hall. I’m here, as well. To the Philippine government, please stop shooting at us and trying to kill us. These guys are going to do a good job of that. To the Canadian government I’m told to tell you to meet the demands. I don’t know what you’re doing but you’re not doing anything for us. John is being sacrificed, his family has been decimated and I’m not sure why or what you’re waiting for,” he said.
And for the first time since their capture, Filipina hostage Marites Flor, who is reportedly Sekkingstad’s girlfriend, was allowed to speak.
“I’m appealing to the Canadian government, Philippine government, President Noynoy Aquino, Mr. Binay, sa lahat ng tumatakbong president, to the owner of marina kung san kami nakuha, kay Mayor Duterte, kay Manny Pacquiao, sa lahat ng celebrities na may malalambot na puso, Miss Kris Aquino, Mr. Robin Padilla, kelangan ng financial na tulong kasi gusto namin makalaya nang buhay,” she said.
[“I’m appealing to the Canadian government, Philippine government, President Noynoy Aquino, Mr. Binay, to all presidential candidates, to the owner of the marina where we were snatched, to Mayor Duterte, Manny Pacquiao and to all kind-hearted celebrities like Miss Kris Aquino, Mr. Robin Padilla…we need financial help because we want to be freed alive.]
A masked member of the Abu Sayyaf threatened to behead the three if the Canadian and Philippine governments fail to meet their demands.
“Note to the Philippine government and to the Canadian government: The lesson is clear. John Ridsdel has been beheaded. Now there are three remaining captives here. If you procrastinate once again on the negotiations, we will behead this all anytime,” the masked militant said.
